Free Community Screenings of "The Visitor"
In "The Visitor," Tom McCarthy's follow-up to his award-winning directorial debut "The StationAgent," an American college professor and a young immigrant couple grapple with the treatment of immigrants and the legal process post-9/11.
Many of SURVIVORS' clients are detained asylum seekers - individuals who are fleeing persecution in their homelands and are often held in U.S. detention centers while they apply for the right to stay.This film offers a powerful and emotional glimpse into the story of one family that experiences the hardships of detention. Confirmed Panelists:
- Dr. George Longstreth, gastroenterologist at Kaiser Permanente and a clinical professor of medicine at UCSD. Dr. Longstreth has been a volunteer doctor for SUVIVORS since 2001. During appointments with asylum seekers, he documents the physical consequences of torture and prepares written affidavits for presentation to the immigration court as part of the application for asylum. Dr. Longstreth attended Arizona State University, then the University of Southern California School of Medicine. After interning at UCSD, he had an internal medicine residency and fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He is a Fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association and the American College of Gastroenterology. He has a Masters Degree in Anthropology from San Diego State University.
- Hamse Warfa, associate executive director at Horn of Africa, one of San Diego ’s most respected refugee assistance organizations. Mr. Warfa, a former refugee, attended Crawford High School in San Diego and then graduated from San Diego State University with a political science degree . He went on to receive Masters of Science in Organizational Management and leadership. Mr. Warfa has been a dedicated advocate for human rights and is a staunch campaigner against poverty and health disparities. Mr. Warfa provides numerous trainings and workshops with expertise on culture, diversity, community development and civic activism. As an advocate for refugees and immigrants for the past 10 years, Mr. Warfa is committed to improving the conditions in which refugees and immigrants live both economically and socially.

Confirmed Panelist:
- Abdi Mohamoud, executive director of Horn of Africa. Born in the Ogaden region of Ethiopia, Mr. Mohamoud moved to San Diego as a refugee from Ethiopia in 1982. He attended Crawford High School and studied Business Administration/ Finance at San Diego State University where he obtained his Bachelors of Science. Abdi also holds a Masters degree in Management from University of Redland’s School of Business. He also completed a certificate program at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business on an advanced Executive Management program. In 2007, Abdi completed a graduate certificate program at the United States Institute for Peace on preventing violent conflicts. Fluent in Somali and English, Mr. Mohamoud has spent the past ten years in a leadership role within the East African community in San Diego through his work as founder and executive director of Horn of Africa. In 2004, San Diego Metropolitan Magazine placed Mr. Mohamoud on its annual list of San Diego’s top 40 under 40 business leaders.
